THE LOST SON
Meeting again after a decade, two brothers have to face the consequences of violence in their childhood.
ANDREJ (38) is a policeman, working on family violence cases. He lives with his girlfriend ANNA (28). On the job he is sent on a police intervention where he runs into his violent brother KRISTIAN (35), whom he hasn’t seen for ten years. Kristian is married to KSENIJA (35) and they have a son DAVID (5). At the same time Anna has a doctor’s appointment. Later on the same day Andrej tells her for the first time that he has a brother. Anna is shocked because Andrej kept this information from her for so long and does not tell him why she’s been at the doctor’s.
Andrej reestablishes some kind of a relationship with his brother who he has mixed feelings for, including feelings of guilt, having left him and their mother with his violent father. He discovers that Kristian is violent to Ksenija, and probably also to David, but he still spends quite a lot of time with him and tries to find the reasons for this violence. At that time Andrej’s behaviour is getting increasingly uncontrolled, reflecting Kristian’s.
At work Andrej is working on a case of alleged abuse of a Muslim girl AISHA (17) by her father. Being on a crusade against violence Andrej loses objectivity in this case and does not realize he has been a victim of a manipulative game led by a homophobic TEACHER at Aisha’s school. For this reason, as well as because he is becoming increasingly violent in everyday life, Andrej starts to get increasingly high and taking prescribed and illegal drugs. Anna struggles with Andrej’s sudden changes. She tells Andrej that she is pregnant. He is euphoric at first but later on he is no longer so sure. Anna can’t take his changeable moods any more so she pulls back.
In a rush of rage Andrej almost kills a rapist and has to get off the field. He realizes that the teacher was manipulative and caused with his hate speech a brutal attack on Aisha who ends up in hospital. Andrej goes to the teacher and threatens him.
Kristian is getting increasingly aggressive. At that time Anna decides to have an abortion due to Andrej’s aggressive behaviour and their unstable future together. Spending more time with Kristian and his son, Andrej is gradually discovering that the reasons for his own and Kristian’s current state are rooted in their childhood. He tells Anna that he decided to have the baby with her. When she tells him, she had an abortion they both break emotionally. They decide to give their relationship another chance.
One night Andrej has a missed call from Ksenija who is asking for help because Kristian is raging. On coming to their apartment Andrej discovers that Kristian killed Ksenija. Andrej removes David and faces Kristian. Kristian asks Andrej to kill him. Andrej leaves him his gun and leaves the apartment.
