Jimmy L.

by Pavo Marinković (Croatia)

The script shines a light on a complex time in the muddled history of Eastern and Central Europe. The screenwriter has managed to navigate a way through the chaos of war and present an engrossing account, based on truth, of an outsider struggling to follow his vocation while confronting racial prejudice and constantly shifting political allegiances.

THE WINTER OF THE CROW

by Sandra Buchta and Kasia Adamik (Poland)

This script presents a thrilling and hugely entertaining account of a special moment in recent European history and confronts themes about the complex relationships between people from different cultures and backgrounds. The writers take us on a journey that is partly comical, partly surreal, and definitely terrifying, as the characters navigate their way through a sudden revolution that has had huge consequences.

SOLOMON’S MOUNTAIN

by Nikolai Lavreniuk and Siarhei Kalasouski (Belarus)

The jury were enchanted by the freshness and originality of the narrative in this quirky drama, in which a decidedly odd couple form a strange but compelling relationship in a deserted and unforgiving environment.  The story deals with matters of faith, family, survival, and companionship, but most of all, it is about how two very different people can find a connection that empowers and liberates them both.

THE MAN WITH THE MAGIC BOX

by Bodo Kox (Poland)

It is our belief that all 11 screenplays developed in the workshop this year are of exceptional quality and fully deserving of production. We expect that all of these projects will receive financial support and will be realized one day on the big screen. Sadly, only one of these deserving projects can be chosen for the Kieslowski Award – but sometimes we feel that a particular screenplay offers such a fresh perspective in terms of story and style that we wish to draw special attention to it. One such script developed this year paints a portrait of a fascinating dystopian future in which a character can travel back and forth in time just through the use of an old radio and some wires. This project has come a miraculous distance since it's origins in Sterdyn, Poland and we would like to award a Special Mention to screenwriter Bodo Kox and The Man With The Magic Box.

LIFE BEATS REALITY

by Andreea Valean (Romania)

A script that cries out because of it's anarchic style, originality, and unflinching honesty in telling the unique story of a filmmaker using a camera to save his family. The story of Pogo, Fatty, Freak, and Grandpa. A film so rooted in the 21st century that it demands to be made.

PAINTED BIRD

by Vaclav Marhoul (Czech Republic)

Advisory Board was impressed by the screenwriter’s bold attempt to take on the task of adapting this acclaimed and complex novel by Jerzy Kosiński, which recounts the harrowing tale of a young abandoned boy struggling for survival during World War 2. It is a challenging and ambitious project that the writer has taken on tenaciously, resulting in a fascinating and moving script that we believe will lead to an imaginative and moving film.

0/1

by George Dorabantu (Romania)

This project proves that great stories need not rely on great budgets or great stars. Imagination, a cyber-hacker and a computer screen are more than enough. The script evidenced exceptional artistry, emotional depth and professional skill.

CAR PARK

by Bence Miklauzic and Ferenc Lengyel (Hungary)

The Board appreciated the refreshing originality and charming characters in this unusual dark comedy drama set in a car park. From such an unpromising location the writers have crafted a delightful tale featuring two extraordinary main characters who challenge each other’s opposing ways of life in all sorts of unexpected ways. We hope and believe that it has the potential to entertain audiences across a wide spectrum, and in many countries.

MEMORIES OF MY HEART

by Irena Hejdova (Czech Republic)

The writer has managed the very difficult task of transforming a complex narrative literary work into an accessible and emotionally powerful film screenplay. She has taken courageous decisions in adapting the format, and the result is a script that promises to hold the audience’s attention from start to finish. She has also managed the considerable feat of making the reader feel that they can connect and identify with the convincing portrayals of the Mongolian characters presented in the exotic landscape of the story.

THE WITNESS

by Mitko Panov and Wladyslaw Pasikowski (Poland)

The board would like to give a Special Mention to this excellent script by Mitko Panov, which successfully combines elements of an entertaining and tense thriller with a profound sense of the political and social consequences of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. It offers a revelatory view of the situation there while simultaneously providing a terrific story, with strong authentic characters.
