Peter Zawrel

Peter Zawrel is the managing director of the Filmfonds Wien (Vienna Film Fund) since November 1999. Born in Vienna 1956, he studied History of Arts, Philology and History and is a Member of the Institute for Austrian Historical Sciences since 1983. After some years as an interdisciplinary free-lancer in several fields of sciences of history and arts in Austria and Italy, he entered the Cultural Department of Lower Austria (1987), where he, among other things, built up the first structured regional support for film, cinema and new media in Austria. In 1988 he created and organized the first Austrian Script Award. Besides, he was the director of a Gallery of contemporary art and publisher of many catalogues and books about art and photography. As a director of the Museum of Lower Austria he planned the new museum together with the architect Hans Hollein. Since 1996 Peter Zawrel is a member of the board of the Film Archive Austria, and since 2002 he is a member of the board of the Austrian Film Museum. He is a co-founder of the European network of regional film funds Cine Regio and a regular at EAVE (as a decision maker) and on many coproduction markets and meetings throughout Europe. He is specially engaged in the cooperation with Central and Eastern European countries and involved in many European coproductions.
